Iron & Wine's Sam Beam joins us in the studio to talk about writing Light Verse, collaborating with Fiona Apple, and how he really feels. Beam, who's 49 and makes spectral yet meticulous folk music under the name Iron and Wine, lives in Durham, NC, and has five daughters with his wife.

We connected with Sam Beam and a few members of his current backing band to discuss how Light Verse, his first album in seven years, came together. As 'Light Verse' quickly affirms, Iron & Wine's Sam Beam is as much a recording artist as an acoustic folkie and is largely intent on creating a diverse sound.

Sam Beam - aka Iron & Wine - returned to Milwaukee Friday night for his first full band gig in town since 2018. The concert kicked off the tour promoting his latest album, 'Light Verse.'

Light Verse by Iron & Wine, released on April 26, 2024, features tracks like "You Never Know," "Anyone's Game," and "All in Good Time" featuring Fiona Apple. The album showcases a new crew of musicians, including bassist Rosali.

Light Verse is a lively, relatively breezy album, despite its somber subject matter. Singer Sam Beam is a richly multidimensional artist, as displayed on this sophisticated, fancy-free new album with killer collaborators.
